Hello, I'm

Jessica.

Hello, I'm Jessica.

I'm American, born and raised in Tennessee, and I spent many years in California—including San Francisco—before moving to France.

I am, quite genuinely, a butter enthusiast. Don't believe me? Ask my friends what I do on a Friday night.

I taste butter.

I'll stand in my kitchen tasting a new butter, deciding which flavor notes I find in it, whether I love it, what I would eat it with—or whether I wouldn't particularly choose to eat it again. All butters are not created equal, and sometimes a butter is simply interesting to try even if it never becomes a staple in my refrigerator.

The Better Butter Blog grew out of that personal love of French butter—and, originally, a little confusion. When I first started shopping for butter in France, I would stand in front of the refrigerated case wondering why there seemed to be a million different choices. Doux, demi-sel, cru, de baratte, AOP—what did they all mean, and which one should I actually buy?

After years of living in France, that confusion has turned into an ongoing exercise in tasting and exploring French butter. I created this blog to put all of those tastings, opinions, favorites, and discoveries in one place.

Everything here reflects my own tastes. Some butters have become favorites that I buy again and again. Others I don't particularly enjoy. And some are simply fun to taste and understand.

So, have you ever found yourself lost in a French grocery store, staring at the butter aisle and wondering what to buy for your baguette—or your radishes?

You're in the right place.
